After being involved with the “Suits” spinoff, Canadian actor Stephen Amell (“Suits LA,” “Arrow”) has been recruited to lead a new “Baywatch” series revival at Fox, as the Los Angeles beach patrol team is making a big comeback to television.
Amell is said to be playing a new iteration of Mitch Buchannon’s (David Hasselhoff) established son, Hobie Buchannon. The Hollywood Reporter adds that Matt Nix is set as showrunner and executive producer on the 12-episode series set to premiere on Fox in 2026-2027, as we await the show’s supporting cast to be announced.
“From the first conversation, Stephen Amell brought exactly what this new chapter of ‘Baywatch’ demands: heart, intensity, and that undeniable hero energy,” Nix said in an official statement posted by the outlet. “He’s the kind of lead who can sprint into danger, carry the emotional weight, and still make it feel fun. We’re so excited to get started.”
There had been a previous attempt to resurrect “Baywatch” back in 2017 with a comedic feature film from director Seth Gordon (“The Night Agent”) starring Dwayne Johnson and Zac Efron, but it ultimately didn’t connect with audiences. The original show debuted back in 1989 and became a launching pad for cast members like Pamela Anderson and Carmen Electra to be thrust into popular culture, as the model/actresses became ’90s icons due to their presence on the episodic show focused on lifeguards’ lives on and off the beach.
If you weren’t already aware, Nix’s previous TV work includes creating shows such as “Burn Notice,” the recent “True Lies” series, and Fox’s “X-Men” show, “The Gifted.”
Cameras are set to begin rolling on “Baywatch” this spring in Venice Beach and on the Fox studio lot in Century City. McG (directing the first episode), who was behind Fox’s “Lethal Weapon” show, is executive producing alongside Michael Berk, Greg Bonann, Doug Schwartz, Dante Di Loreto, and Mike Horowitz.
