Canadian filmmaker and comedic actor Matt Johnson, behind films such as “Blackberry,” “Nirvanna the Band the Show the Movie,” and the upcoming “Tony” (the A24 biopic of the late chef, author, and travel show host Anthony Bourdain), is lining up his next untitled feature film effort with the help of NEON.
As revealed by The Hollywood Reporter, NEON has acquired the worldwide rights and will release the flick in the U.S., as they’ll be handling international sales at the Cannes Film Market (happening alongside the Cannes Film Festival). It will focus on the true-life events surrounding an editor at Vice Media who was infamously caught up in a drug bust, as he was alleged by employees to have been using the offices for a cocaine-smuggling operation.

That’s not it, as they’ve recruited Canadian actor Finn Wolfhard of “Stranger Things” and recent installments in Sony‘s “Ghostbusters” franchise fame for the main role of the Canadian investigative journalist, who broke the story. Vice was best known for its gonzo journalism, tackling shock tourism, drug beat stories, and its infamous co-founder, Gavin McInnes, was behind the formation of the U.S. domestic terrorist group, The Proud Boys.
Department M is executive producing the titleless pic with Matthew Miller and Matt Greyson set as producers via Zapruder Films, in association with Rhombus Media. Also, Telefilm Canada is onboard to help finance, and Elevation Pictures will be overseeing the Canadian side of the film’s distribution.
Johnson is also developing a feature film based on the fantasy universe card game “Magic: The Gathering” for Legendary (“Dune”); however, it doesn’t sound like that project announced back in 2025 is happening anytime soon.
We’ll have to be patient to see who else Matt Johnson ends up casting in his untitled Vice Media film alongside Wolfhard, but given the talent he assembled for “Tony” (stars Dominic Sessa, Antonio Banderas, Emilia Jones, and Leo Woodall), there is a good shot we could end up seeing more high-profile names attached to the gestating project.
