There is a bit of shake-up with Andy Samberg‘s new romantic comedy “42.6 Years,” as it was going to see the funny man teamed up with “Hacks” lead Jean Smart and helmed by Craig Gillespie (“Supergirl”), both have departed the feature project that was previously at Amazon MGM Studios.
Deadline details a rather large update on the rom-com with a sci-fi twist as Annette Bening has taken over Smart’s role, director Michael Schwartz has taken the reins from Gillespie, and it’s landed at Focus Features, pivoting from Amazon.

In the pic, Samberg awakens after being frozen for decades and attempts to find his ex-girlfriend, as the two now have a rather large age gap. Samberg broke the story of “42.6 Years” with screenwriter Seth Reiss, who fleshed everything out into a script. Reiss, a veteran comedy writer, has previous credits that include “The Menu,” “A Big Bold Beautiful Journey,” and the HBO series “The Regime.”
The report also features a brief logline for the movie:
42.6 Years follows Ben (Samberg), who, after an experimental procedure leaves him cryogenically frozen for 42.6 years, sets out to reconnect with his ex-girlfriend Ruthie (Bening). While he hasn’t aged a day, she’s lived an entire lifetime without him.
Previously, Schwartz co-directed “Los Frikis” and “The Peanut Butter Falcon” with creative collaborator Tyler Nilson.
“42.6” sounds like it could be something extremely exciting, as the sci-fi angle with cryogenics might allow for some extremely funny elements, including what kind of world Ben wakes up to (hard not to get some baseline vibes from Mike Judge‘s “Idiocracy” and “Futurama” with this project).
