‘Skeletons’: JT Mollner Expected To Direct Brie Larson In Bad Robot Creature Feature Before A24’s ‘Texas Chainsaw’ Series

Earlier this month, it was revealed that A24, JT Mollner (“Strange Darling”), and Glen Powell would be teaming up for a series iteration of “The Texas Chainsaw Massacre,” but it looks like Mollner has a gestating film project to helm before that. That new movie is “Skeletons” (formerly known as “Fail-Safe“), a creature feature that has Oscar-winner Brie Larson (“Room”) in the lead role and J.J. Abrams attached as a producer.

While the pic launched last year during the Cannes Film Market, “Skeletons” is now heading to the European Film Market this month (alongside the Berlin International Film Festival), as mentioned by folks over at Bloody Disgusting, and landing that new title after being called “Fail-Safe” (an adaptation of the short story penned by Philip Fracassi). There is an expectation it’ll go in front of cameras before A24’s “Texas Chainsaw Massacre” show.

In the report, the outlet mentioned a brief synopsis:

“A modern take on the creature horror film told from the perspective of a young boy who slowly begins to discover that his beloved parents are hiding a disturbing secret about his mother’s true nature.”

Of course, Larson is no stranger to the world of genre projects, with credits that include “Captain Marvel,” “Avengers: Endgame,” “The Marvels,” “Kong: Skull Island,” “Scott Pilgrim vs. The World,” “Fast X,” and Ben Wheatley‘s underrated gun-running comedy “Free Fire,” where she co-starred with Cillian Murphy.

Abrams produces “Skeletons” via his production banner Bad Robot alongside Infrared and Assemble Media. “With ‘Fail-Safe,’ Brian Duffield has written an absolute powerhouse of a script. It’s a horror film that is as sweet and moving as it is terrifying. To have JT Mollner in the director’s chair, his ‘Strange Darling’ blew me away, is a dream come true. Finally, having the limitlessly talented Brie Larson as our star sets up Fail-Safe to be that rare horror film that makes you laugh, feel, and care, before taking you on an absolutely wild ride,” Abrams said in an official statement from 2025 during the Cannes sales launch.
