Sean Baker Says Next Movie May “Lean Into Comedy” & Share “Similar Themes” With ‘Anora’: Hopes To Get It Off Ground In 2026

Anora” writer/director Sean Baker is briefly teasing what audiences can expect from his next feature film effort after tallking at Deadline Red Sea Studios in Jeddah, Saudi Arabia, on Thursday, where he confirmed he completed a new short film starring Oscar-winner Michelle Yeoh (“Everything Everywhere All At Once,” “Wicked”) as the Malaysia-set short was made for fashion brand Self-Portrait.

Baker told Deadline his next untitled feature project will be “along the same size as ‘Anora’ and perhaps covering similar themes.” Adding, “I will say I would like to continue to lean into comedy a little bit more. So, it might be a little bit more of an overt humorous movie but hopefully I’m getting it off the ground next year.”

Back in June, Sean Baker made a point to share his disinterest in tackling some big studio IP like a Marvel film, so his comments about making another film at the scale of “Anora” sounds about right to his previous statements teasing what would next for the filmmaker.

At this moment, it is unclear if Bake is aiming to reunite with Mikey Madison, who walked away with the Best Actress Oscar for the leading role of Ani, a charming but naive sex worker with dreams of the high life when marrying a young wealthy Russian client. Of course, the comedic pic wading in the waters of a crime thriller would go on to also win Best Picture, Best Director, Best Original Screenplay, and Best Editing with Baker taking home those statues, four in total.

Madison since her win has joined the cast of Aaron Sorkin’s “The Social Network Part II” landing a main role, the crime drama “Darling California” (taking a part opposite Jessica Chastain, Chris Pine, and Josh Brolin), and was once poised to co-star with Kirsten Dunst (“Roofman”) in the Florida-set erotic animal trade thriller “Reptilla” (said to involve a mermaid).
