Filmmaker Duncan Jones (“Moon”) hasn’t made a feature since 2018’s “Mute,” a cyberpunk thriller that featured Swedish actor Alexander Skarsgård (“The Northman”) as a protagonist with a moral code who cannot speak in a very bleak future setting. And his next feature is a long-gestating feature adaptation of the 2000 AD comic book “Rogue Trooper” (another mature comic from the publisher of “Judge Dredd“), co-created by Gerry Finley-Day and Dave Gibbons.
The off-world military project from Liberty Films and Rebellion was once being developed as live-action, but Jones would eventually announce their creative pivot to animation. With that in mind, Deadline has posted a new batch of images from “Rogue Trooper” showcasing the lead character and the look of the world, and a teaser trailer has also dropped.
Aneurin Barnard, Hayley Atwell, Sean Bean, Matt Berry, Asa Butterfield, Jemaine Clement, Jack Lowden, Alice Lowe, Daryl McCormack, Diane Morgan, and Reece Shearsmith lead the cast of “Rogue Trooper.”
A logline for the animated pic, as mentioned by the outlet:
In the future, soldiers will have their military skills and personalities transferred onto a microchip that can then be downloaded into a new host, human or otherwise. Which is how number 19, aka the Rogue Trooper (Barnard), comes to find himself caught behind enemy lines with a very odd platoon: Gunnar (voiced by Lowden), his rifle; Bagman (Shearsmith), his backpack; and Helm (McCormack), his helmet. Comedy icon Ade Edmonson even has a cameo — as a pair of boots.
Liberty Film’s Stuart Fenegan and CAA Media Finance are handling the film’s sales; we assume it will be heading to the Cannes Film Market, which is next month, alongside the Cannes Film Festival.
