Many genre film fans are foaming from the mouth with anticipation for James Cameron’s upcoming second installment of his sci-fi romantic adventure film “Avatar” with “Avatar: The Way of Water”’ finally heading to theaters after what feels like a decade of waiting.
Well, we now have a good idea of how long the film’s runtime will be, as The Hollywood Reporter points out that “The Way of Water” clocks in at three hours and ten minutes. For some comparison, the original landmark visual effects-driven film that debuted back in 2009 had a runtime of two hours and forty-one minutes, which means the sequel is nearly half an hour longer. You should plan your bathroom breaks strategically.
The cast consists of returning actors and new additions such as Zoe Saldana, Sam Worthington, Sigourney Weaver, Stephen Lang, Cliff Curtis, Joel David Moore, CCH Pounder, Edie Falco, Jemaine Clement, and Kate Winslet.
Here is the official logline of the first of four sequels from Cameron:
Set more than a decade after the events of the first film, “Avatar: The Way of Water” begins to tell the story of the Sully family (Jake, Neytiri, and their kids), the trouble that follows them, the lengths they go to keep each other safe, the battles they fight to stay alive, and the tragedies they endure.
We’ll have to see how this second fares at the global box office to get a clear picture of how much of an appetite audiences have for three more adventures on Pandora as the pic flies onto screens on December 16. However, most will say, “don’t bet against Cameron,” and historically, that’s a very educated statement to make if you don’t count things he co-wrote/produced like “Alita: Battle Angel” or “Terminator: Dark Fate.”
