‘Miami Vice’: Joseph Kosinski & Dan Gilroy Remake Being Released August 6, 2027 By Universal

Well, it looks like we’re getting that new “Miami Vice” movie a bit sooner than we were expecting, as Universal Pictures has set the cop actioner for a release in 2027, which hails from “Top Gun: Maverick” director Joseph Kosinski and recent Emmy-winning writer Dan Gilroy of “Andor.”

That specific date announced today for “Miami Vice” will be August 6, 2027, which would be toward the tail end of the summer blockbuster season and likely gives the pic enough distance from tough competition from May to July.

Gilroy penned the script with Eric Singer, as they’re hoping to get cameras rolling in 2026, as casting for the key lead roles of undercover Miami PD detectives Sonny Crockett and Ricardo Tubbs is now underway. His other credits over the years include “The Fall,” “Nightcrawler,” “Kong: Skull Island,” “Real Steel,” and “The Bourne Legacy.”

The original series that aired from 1984 to 1989, produced by Michael Mann (oddly, never directed episodes), would end up a phenomenon on traditional television and saw an avalanche of young acting talent getting small roles in the show, only to become well-known later on in their careers. Mann would eventually reboot the material himself with the 2006 film that starred Colin Farrell and Jamie Foxx, which has developed a bit of a cult following over the years from genre fans.

While we never got a sequel from Mann, this creative pairing of Gilroy and Kosinski feels like something equally special.

Considering the subject matter of vice squads, we’re not entirely sure their take on “Miami Vice” is going to be for younger audiences, as some of the crimes involved in the movie could feature drug smuggling, combating cartels, Neo-Nazis, Miami gangs, human trafficking, and prostitution. Not exactly kid-friendly material, and we’d assume it could go a tad darker than what we’ve seen with Kosinski’s other theatrical releases.
