‘Supergirl’: Milly Alcock Talks DCU Flick Being Set In “Different Universe” & Critical Fans While Punk Rock Kara Described As “A Cosmic Loner”

This month sees Milly Alcock lead her own solo “Supergirl” movie before taking a supporting role in James Gunn‘s big DCU event film “Man of Tomorrow” next year, and this will have audiences experience a very different take on Kara as she isn’t as straight-laced as other incarnations (maybe the polar opposite of the 1984 film version) being a boozy party girl (established with her drunken introduction in “Superman” last year) with a chip on her shoulders.

In a new interview and profile on Alcock at GQ Magazine, we learn some of the different elements that are informing this version of Kara from the actress and the film’s writer. “This is a different universe,” Alcock told GQ of the new off-world DCU flick, “and in order to survive and thrive within that universe, Kara has learned that the way that she is heard or taken seriously is to act like a man. If she acts like a woman, she’s gonna get hurt, physically or emotionally.”

The film’s screenwriter, Ana Nogueira (also tasked to reboot “Wonder Woman” for DC Studios), says she saw Kara as “a loner in the cosmos,” hardened by memories of losing her entire family to the destruction of her home planet. “She grew up on Krypton, versus Superman, who has no memory of it. Her relationship to outer space and these planets is very different from his, and her relationship to loss is very different from his.”

On the fan front, Alcock is aware she has to pick her battles, “There’s an ownership that a fan base has, and rightfully so…They’re gonna have opinions on it, but that’s also something that’s tricky to figure out. You cannot please everyone.”

We’re also going to be introduced to Jason Momoa‘s Lobo (hard not to imagine showing up as well in “Man of Tomorrow” is likely being discussed), as the actor has talked up to Collider on the promotional tour that he’s only interested in an R-rated solo movie refusing to do a PG-13 version, which is all but expected given that was what Michael Bay‘s unmade incarnation was aiming to do. Gunn is obviously not shying away from mature DC stories with the HBO Max series “Peacemaker” and “The Suicide Squad” under his belt. The body horror flick “Clayface” is also going to be R-rated, so Momoa’s stance on the “Lobo” movie taking that route would be the furthest thing from shocking to us.

“Supergirl” is going to be unleashed in theaters on June 26, and we’ll see how Kara fits into the DCU beyond the “Superman” sequel, as director Craig Gillespie is leaving the door open for more DC projects, telling The Playlist he’d like to do more Kara stories. We have to assume that if the movie does well enough for Warner Bros. at the box office and there is a solid reaction from audiences, sequels are most likely going to be on the table, as you can allow her to have more off-world adventures and leave the Earthbound stories for crossovers.
