After a recent screening of “Captain America: Civil War,” the Russo Brothers have confirmed during a Q&A a longstanding rumor that they and Marvel Studios had once considered having Josh Brolin‘s malveant Thanos killing Robert Downey Jr.‘s Tony Stark/Iron Man in “Avengers: Infinity War,” This was something that didn’t ultimately happen, but Thanos did get the best of the Avengers and Guardians of the Galaxy after Doctor Strange gave up the Time Stone (this came after Strange used it to see every possible angle and it was the only way he saw that they would come away as winning the day).
After the rumor of an earlier attempt to kill Stark at the hands of Thanos was brought up by ComicBookResources, Joe Russo responded (RDJ also in attendance) with, “This happens a lot in these rooms, right? We try to…I’m feeling the heat now. We try to investigate. We try to investigate all angles, right? Everything’s up for grabs. We always say, ‘Best idea wins.’ And a lot of the [time] you gotta stretch…We have to stretch the taffy a little bit, pull the taffy a little bit, stretch it, see where it goes. There was a moment where we thought, ‘They’re not expecting it. This could be the best place to possibly do it.’ But then we’d have to figure out how he could potentially still participate in the next movie. And then we went, ‘F*** it, let’s just do it in the next movie.'”

Ultimately, avoiding the move that would have undercut Stark’s sacrifice in “Avengers: Endgame” was the better choice and allowed the character to show that he isn’t as selfish as he originally was in the first solo “Iron Man,” evolving into the hero he admired to become after escaping that cave and the grasp of the terrorist group, The Ten Rings.
What’s up next for the MCU and The Russo Brothers? They’ve wrapped on “Avengers: Doomsday,” coming this December with RDJ embodying the “Fantastic Four” villain Victor Von Doom (who is considered a Thanos-level threat in the comic books, given his obsession with gaining cosmic powers), and they’re expected to start shooting “Avengers: Secret Wars” this year, although we haven’t got an official casting list for that one (could be coming in the future, mind you).
Fans should get comfortable with the idea of more superhero collateral damage in the new two “Avengers” installments with Singerverse actors bringing “X-Men” and other mutants to the fold, which we’ve long suspected could be cannon fodder for the Russo Brothers before picking off legacy heroes ahead of their talk of an MCU reset (expected to happen after the events of their other big Multiverse event film “Secret Wars”).
