Tom Holland returns to the Peter Parker role next month in the Destin Daniel Cretton-directed “Spider-Man: Brand New Day,” and while many think there are more installments in store for the British actor, he’s already talking about what happens to the franchise without him being in front of the camera.
In a new interview/profile at Esquire Magazine, Holland has revealed that he’s aiming to keep involved with the “Spider-Man” franchise even after he’s exited from the role as a producer (although he’s well aware how difficult that goal would be to lock down) and even named recent Emmy-winner Owen Cooper from “Adolescence” (a breakout gritty performance from the youngster) as his potential replacement for the Peter Parker part.

“Owen Cooper would be awesome…Obviously, he’s super-talented and the talk of the town right now,” Holland said of his potential successor once he walks away from the Peter Parker role. Holland is aware that it’s “pretty tough to get a producing credit on future movies,” but still wants to be deeply involved with the next era of the franchise. “In the way that Robert Downey was such a mentor for me in my first three movies, I would love to be that person for whoever is next.”
Mind you, Holland has talked up the idea of a live-action version of Miles Morales of the “Spider-Verse” coming into the mainline MCU after Donald Glover played the MCU version of The Prowler in “Spider-Man: Homecoming,” who happens to be Miles’ uncle Aaron and got a chance to play The Prowler in the last animated flick. Then again, with talk of the Marvel Studios-wide reset, we’re curious if that means more Holland movies or a pivot to Miles or a new actor as Parker.
This comes after Cooper himself told Jimmy Fallon on “The Tonight Show” that Spider-Man would be a “dream role” for him down the line, after the host brought him up for the iconic Marvel hero, “In like 10 years’ time, maybe. But that’s, like, everyone’s dream as a kid. So, like, I seen this on TikTok. Like, everyone thinks I expected to be to play Spider-Man, but I was like, ‘No, that’s not true.’ I wanted It was a dream of mine since I was a kid, so, yeah, it’s, I’m not expecting it…I just wanted to be it.”
Well, it sounds like if Holland has any say, he’d be at least considered for it. Until then, audiences can enjoy the latest web-head romp when “Spider-Man: Brand New Day” heads to theaters on July 31. We’ll keep our fingers crossed that Holland sticks around for at least one more solo movie with “Spider-Man 5” (Cretton potentially back in the director’s chair if the audience embraces his take on the hero), but that is out of our hands.
