Over the weekend, the New York Knicks ended a 53-year drought to win the NBA Finals in five games, launching the entire city into a wave of joy and pride for the iconic basketball team. Well, around the win, the sports brand Nike released a very touching ad.
Interestingly enough, it was surprisingly revealed to be helmed by Josh Safdie (as revealed by his peer and Knicks super-fan Ben Stiller on social media, who was spotted courtside with Timothee Chalamet and Safdie during the finals) and features the beloved Billy Joel song “New York State of Mind.”

Safdie, of course, is one half of the sibling directing duo (alongside his brother Benny Safdie, who has a supporting role in Christopher Nolan‘s “The Oydssey“) who have since split to direct their own solo features, with Josh recently making “Marty Supreme,” which led Chalamet to land a second Best Actor nomination for playing Marty Mauser, a fame-driven ping-pong hustler trying to will himself into the big time any way he can.
Despite Benny lining up projects like reuniting with his “Smashing Machine” lead Dwayne Johnson for the film “Lizard Music,” Josh, on the other hand, has yet to officially announce what is next for him. Although he was once trying to put together a remake of the Walter Hill two-hander “48 Hrs.,” which originally starred a young Eddie Murphy (pre-“Beverly Hills Cop“) and Nick Nolte as a convict and cop that had to reluctantly work together to solve a case in a short window of time, as suggested by the title.
Anywho, you can check out that new Nike ad helmed by Safdie below, as many of us are still reeling from the Knicks’ win and the positive energy now engulfing the city.
