Oscar-Winning ‘Power Of The Dog’ Director Jane Campion Developing Her First Musical

It’s been a tad quiet concerning what’s next for Jane Campion, the Oscar-winning director of the acclaimed and award-winning queer Western thriller “The Power of the Dog” (earning a massive 12 Oscar nominations in total back in 2022), and it sounds like the filmmaker has potentially found her next project and will push her into new territory.

While speaking with the folks over at Variety, the Kiwi filmmaker has revealed she’s now developing her first-ever musical feature film, but stopped short of giving any concrete details and if it would be based on any existing material or stage performances. So, we’ll have to be a little patient about getting our mitts on any further information on that project. However, now that we have that germ of a concept, we’re itching to find out more about what Campion is putting together there, as the prospect is very tantalizing to say the least, given Campion’s fantastic body of work.

In that same interview, while she acknowledged the horrific actions of infamous Hollywood producer and convicted rapist Harvey Weinstein, Campion would go on to lavish praise on his promotional work on her other award-winning effort, “The Piano,” which had Holly Hunter, Harvey Keitel, Sam Neill, and Anna Paquin in key roles. Hunter and Paquin would earn Oscar statues in 1994 for their performances, while Campion walked away with an Oscar for her screenwriting. Campion crediting Weinstein for the 1993 film’s success, not completely without warrant, but still in the wake of his slew of sexual assaults, feels extremely odd.

“Can I say one thing that’s going to be very disturbing? Harvey Weinstein, as we know, did some horrific things, but he also did some great things for the arts and for getting audiences. He was bold in that way. He loved films. I have to admit, [the marketing strategy] was his vision,” Campion responded when directly asked why she believed ‘The Piano’ was successful despite having sort of a niche premise that might have otherwise not been super marketable to a global audience.

Hopefully, we don’t have to wait over a decade before Jane Campion makes this newly announced musical, as we saw with the feature work gap between “Bright Star” and the aforementioned “The Power of the Dog.” Stay tuned, as we’ll certainly be sharing any updates on this gestating musical as things start to come together.
