Chris Hemsworth Says ‘Thor 5’ Would Have To Be “Drastically Different” To Keep His Sanity & Isn’t Involved With ‘Star Trek 4’ Anymore

“Thor” star Chris Hemsworth is one of a handful of Phase 1 actors still playing a major superhero in the Marvel Cinematic Universe. We’re already seen actors like Robert Downey Jr., Scarlett Johansson, and Chris Evans end their tenure as Marvel heroes, and that same thing presumably will happen to Hemsworth at some point. While the actor has previously indicated that he could be looking at his potential final outing as the God of Thunder soon, he certainly has some demands as to what a solo project would have to look like if Marvel comes knocking. 

Hemsworth spoke with the Happy Sad Confused podcast (listen below) about a hypothetical fifth “Thor” installment and suggested that they would have to do something different with the character for him to want to do another solo adventure for Marvel Studios.

“You look at ‘Thor’ one and two. They were quite similar, ‘Ragnarok’ and ‘Love & Thunder’ similar; it’s just reinventing it. I’ve had such a unique opportunity with ‘Infinity War’ and ‘Endgame’ to do very drastic things with the character. I enjoy that, keeping people on their toes, but it keeps me on my toes; it keeps me invested. I’ve said this before, but when it becomes too familiar, I think there is a risk of getting lazy. So, I don’t know. I don’t even know if I’m invited back. If I was, it would have to be a drastically different version, in tone, everything. Just for my own sanity,” Hemsworth said about what the future holds with a fifth “Thor” movie. 

You can’t help but empathize with Hemsworth as while he obviously has fun playing the role; it can be a little difficult to spice things up after eight major appearances as the beloved Norse god. 

As it stands, “Thor 5” isn’t on Marvel’s ever-growing feature film slate, but there are a few installments that could bring Hemsworth back to the MCU, such as Destin Daniel Cretton’s “Avengers: The Kang Dynasty” or “Avengers: Secret Wars.” Traditionally, Thor has been notably involved with all four previous installments of the “Avengers” franchise, and there hasn’t been an indication he’ll be sitting out. Both films are expected to have strong Multiverse settings allowing for Hemsworth to potentially play variants of Thor in the movie (like in the “Loki” series), allowing him more wiggle-room to try different things like when the character gained a bunch of weight in “Endgame.”

Also, Hemsworth briefly talked about his potential involvement with “Star Trek 4” after a previous incarnation hoped to have him pair up with his on-screen son, Captain Kirk, played by Chris Pine, via time travel. He initially played Kirk’s dad Geroge Kirk in the first J.J. Abrams-directed film that kicked off a reboot trilogy set in an alternative timeline linked to events leading up to George’s death. However, don’t expect him to return to that “Star Trek” role anytime soon, as he essentially alludes to being too old to play the 2009 version of George Kirk and that things never came together to make that version of the story work.

“It just wasn’t… a few reasons really, but it just didn’t really, umm, it wasn’t what I was thinking it could’ve been, and I thought, ok, cool, let’s figure that out and keep going, but I think everyone got busy and so on,” Hemsworth said, trying to explain what happened. “But it would be a bit weird now to flashback to your father, and why’s he so much older?”
