Colman Domingo Admits Marvel Talks But Says Kang Recasting Wasn’t For Him: “I Want To Build Something From The Ground Up”

When Marvel Studios and Disney fired Jonathan Majors in the wake of the actor’s legal troubles, there had been chatter online about the studio considering contenders to replace Majors as Kang The Conqueror. One of those names for the plausible recasting making the rounds was two-time Oscar nominee Colman Domingo (“The Color Purple,” “Sing Sing“), and he has since admitted speaking with Marvel about the MCU but has poured cold water on the idea of playing Kang or having that desire while speaking with Josh Horowitz for his podcast, “Happy Sad Confused.”

“So, we did follow up with a sit-down meeting with the heads of Marvel. So, we did do that, and we talked openly about the landscape of Marvel or even the Kang rumors,” Domingo said to Horowitz when the possibility of Kang and the MCU was brought up.

However, the actor on the rise has some caveats and is not keen on the idea of replacing actors, “But I feel like I want a role to be mine, whatever that role is, whatever I develop. Something didn’t feel right to me, like, ‘Oh, would I replace someone?’ No, I want to build something from the ground up that’s my own.”

“I feel like that was never a conversation from my point of view if I was discussed [to take over the Kang role],” Domingo said of that Marvel meeting. “I still don’t know if I was discussed, but I just know that I would want to build something up from the ground up. So, there’s still talks.”

As Domingo put it, those talks with Marvel are still ongoing and he’s certainly the kind of actor you’d want to play either a hero or villain in the MCU. We’ll keep our fingers crossed that they’ll find the right part for him.

One thing that Domingo can bank on is that there will be plenty of MCU roles to fill in the future when he’s ready to make the jump. It is worth mentioning that Domingo has been previously hired by Marvel Animation and Marvel Television as he voices Harry Osborn, aka The Green Goblin in the animated Disney+ series, “Your Friendly Neighborhood Spider-Man.”

Finding the right MCU role for Domingo shouldn’t be a rushed process as you want an actor to feel the electricity when that selection is made.

Marvel ended up pumping the breaks on that recasting Kang rumbling as soon as they announced they would pivot from “Avengers: The Kang Dynasty” to “Avengers: Doomsday” with Robert Downey Jr. returning to the MCU as a Multiverse version of Doctor Doom. We’ve all but assumed after “Loki” season two’s ending and dismissal of Kang as a Multiverse threat by the TVA, that we might not see him return anytime soon anyway.
