While we’re waiting to hear about new casting for Denis Villeneuve‘s “Dune Messiah,” a returning cast member has already spilled the beans about their grand return to Arrakis as Jason Momoa mentioned he’ll be back during his promotional tour for “A Minecraft Movie.”
Momoa revealed to “Today” earlier in the day that he’ll be reprising the Duncan Idaho role in the third film based on the second book by author/creator Frank Herbert and wasn’t terribly upset about making that reveal on air, given the books have been part of pop culture for decades.

“Well, I’m not sure if I’m going to get in trouble or not, but it’s the same thing like ‘Game of Thrones’, you know what I mean?” Momoa said of his resurrection in the franchise in the upcoming “Dune” installment. “If you didn’t read the books, it’s not my fault, right? Yeah, there’s going to be…I’m going to be coming back.”
You might remember that Momoa’s heroic character dies in the first film after a big fight scene with the Emperor’s elite deadly military force known as The Sardaukar. It remains to be seen if the exact supernatural way Duncan Idaho returns from the dead in the novel will be applied the same way for “Dune Messiah,” as the film can always take liberties with the source material and the varying abilities in that universe.
Momoa would be joining a cast that features fellow returning actors such as Timothee Chalament, Florence Pugh, Zendaya, Javier Bardem, Josh Brolin, Anya Taylor-Joy, and Rebecca Ferguson.
We’re still waiting for Legendary and Warner Bros. to announce an official release date for “Dune Messiah,” but there have been some indications that Villeneuve is going to start shooting sooner than expected. What we do know is that Villeneuve has said this will be his final outing and will hand off future installments like “Children of Dune” to another filmmaker.
You can watch Momoa’s full chat on “Today” below, where he dished about his return to the “Dune” franchise and more.
