‘Mother Mary’: David Lowery Recalls Anne Hathaway Having A Confidence Breakdown On Set: “It Felt Like Shooting ‘Apocalypse Now'”

Director David Lowery (“The Green Knight”) and Anne Hathaway have teamed on the pop star A24 flick “Mother Mary,” where the actress had to move out of her comfort zone to play a character akin to a hybrid of Lady Gaga/Taylor Swift as she not only had tap into her song and dance abilities, that likely put a bit of a toll on her leading to a breakdown on set and potentially questioning her confidence in the role.

Lowery recently spoke with Vogue Magazine for a profile on Hathaway and their upcoming film, which he said was such an intense experience that the Oscar-winner had a bit of an breakdown while filming a sequence that led her co-star Michaela Coel (“Chewing Gum”) playing a friend to the pop star to reassure her that the set was a safe space and a place of “trust.”

“It felt like shooting ‘Apocalypse Now,'” Lowery told Vogue of a key scene toward the end of the new A24 film. “At one point, Annie broke down and said, ‘I have to apologize, because I think what’s going to come out of me will hurt you.’ And Michaela took her hands and said, ‘I love you, I trust you,'” the director recalled. “We were in various stages of that for about a week, shooting that scene.”

Sounds like Hathaway put herself in quite the vulnerable state during those sequences, and we’ll see how that exactly translates for the quality of her performance.

The rest of the supporting cast features the likes of Hunter Schafer (“Blade Runner 2099”), Jessica Brown Findlay (“Downton Abbey”), Sian Clifford (“Fleabag”), Kaia Gerber (“Babylon”), and singer/actress FKA Twigs (“The Crow”), alongside having music contributions from Jack Antonoff and Charli XCX.
