‘Bunker’: Paul Dano Joins Javier Bardem, Penélope Cruz, Stephen Graham & Patrick Schwarzenegger In Psychological Thriller

Last week, beloved actor Paul Dano took some cheap shots from Quentin Tarantino as the “Kill Bill” filmmaker, calling his performance in Paul Thomas Anderson‘s “There Will Be Blood” opposite Daniel Day-Lewis “weak sauce” and “the worst fucking actor in SAG,” which came off as one of many out-of-touch moments from the director (he’s shared a lot of bad takes over the years) that has led to fellow actors and the online community supporting Dano from Tarantino’s oddball ire. It doesn’t look like Dano is going to lose any work from those comments, as he just landed a part in the new Florian Zeller-directed (“The Father,” “The Son”) psychological thriller “Bunker.”

The casting report hailing from Variety reveals he’ll be working alongside Javier Bardem, Penélope Cruz, Stephen Graham, and recent “White Lotus” breakout Patrick Schwarzenegger. “Bunker” is said to explore “the unraveling of a family as a mysterious construction project, a bunker commissioned by a powerful tech mogul, begins to infiltrate their lives.”

“We are thrilled to welcome Paul Dano to the cast,” said Zeller in an official statement concerning Dano’s casting. “From ‘Little Miss Sunshine‘ to ‘There Will Be Blood,’ Paul has consistently impressed me as an actor. He possesses an extraordinary singularity, something genuinely unique, and in that sense, he is truly irreplaceable.”

Next up, Dano will be seen in “The Wizard of the Kremlin,” as we wait for an official U.S. release of the film that features him playing a spin doctor with Jude Law playing Vladimir Putin. There is also the possibility that Dano may return to Gotham City, as production for Matt Reeves‘ “The Batman Part II,” which recently has Scarlett Johansson (“Under The Skin”) in talks to play a mysterious key role, and there may be room for Paul to reprise The Riddler, even if just in some brief scenes in Arkham Asylum (where he’s seemingly being chummy with Barry Keoghan‘s Joker).

While we shouldn’t take Tarantino’s snipes against Dano too seriously. It is a tad hard not to be reminded that he’s attempting to make his big return to acting with the film “Only What We Carry,” starring opposite Simon Pegg and Sofia Boutella. One playing psychologist may theorize his recent attacks on various actors, which also included Owen Wilson and Matthew Lillard, could be Tarantino simply projecting his own performance insecurities and anxities (it will be his first major role since 1996’s “From Dusk Till Dawn,” a 20-year gap) on that upcoming project after his acting career hasn’t exactly gone his way over the decades. With that in mind, the looming public/critical reactions could be getting to him, or he’s simply exposing himself as a jerk without much self-control.
