Ridley Scott Teases Western In The Works, Wants To Eventually Tackle Pirate & Musical Films

Ridley Scott has been quite the impressive filmmaker on the sheer volume of projects he’s been able to accomplish over the decades, and isn’t slowing down anytime soon, as he has a new sci-fi movie on the way with “The Dog Stars.” In a recent interview, Scott reveals he’s inching closer to making a Western after trying for ages to put one together in the past.

Speaking with Collider, Scott said he has an intention to make a Western (he had long attempted a feature adaptation of Cormac McCarthy‘s “Blood Meridian” before it ultimately landed on the lap of John Hillcoat) after securing the rights to an unnamed script based on a novel. Alongside that, Scott teased his desire to make a pirate movie and musical.

“If they’re good enough, and you know it’s not the moment because everyone’s afraid of it, you keep it sitting, waiting, and then come back. So, I have a Western, which is the best Western I’ve ever read. It was on a shelf of an author who had died. It’s from his estate. We tracked it. I bought the script, so I own it, and the moment will come to make it. So, I still have to do a musical. I still have to do a pirate movie. I still have to do a Western,” Scott told Collider.

However, the director was quick to point out he wasn’t ready to reveal the mysterious book’s title.

Scott recently indicated in an interview that he might be finally done making his own “Alien” projects (his production company, Scott Free, oversees the franchise), putting the fate of his third prequel film, “Alien: Awakening,” in question.

While these projects sound exciting as hell, some perspective should be dropped here as the British director has a laundry list of projects that he never ended up making. A few examples include a Merlin origin film at Disney and a feature film based on the board game Monopoly. So, while a pirate film and musical sound amazing, we don’t know how real those could end up being, given that Scott moves between projects like the wind, even at his age.

The director’s current project, “The Dog Stars,” is a post-apocalyptic sci-fi flick based on the Peter Heller novel, which is at 20th Century Studios and set to be released on March 27, 2026 (has been shooting since April). It boasts an impressive cast that features Jacob Elordi (“Frankenstein”), Margaret Qualley (“The Substance”), Josh Brolin (“Weapons”), Guy Pearce (“The Brutalist”), and Benedict Wong (“Prometheus”).

He’s also attached to a Bee Gees biopic at Paramount Pictures, which is expected to be next.
