Despite Season 4 of “The Bear” being wrapped up last year, Hulu has released a new episode (arriving tomorrow) of the popular culinary world dramedy series with Ebon Moss-Bachrach and Jon Bernthal (the two acting pals recently seen on Broadway doing a stage version of “Dog Day Afternoon“).
An intersting angle here is that Moss-Bachrach and Bernthal co-wrote the episode together with creator Christopher Storer, directing it. The fifth and final season of “The Bear” is expected to debut this June/July on Hulu, but having that episode titled “Gary” available to stream is potentially a sign that audiences could get more from that universe, even if the mainline show is ending.

Per the official logline (via Variety) from the streaming service, the episode takes a look at “the two friends’ complicated relationship, uncovering new layers of Mikey’s mental state while offering crucial insight into the man Richie is when audiences first meet him in Season 1 — adding emotional context that reframes their story from the very beginning.”
Without spoiling too much about the show, Bernthal plays the older brother of Jeremy Allen White’s Carmy, who ends up topping himself and his Chicago sandwich shop/restaurant lands in the hands of his baby brother, who has some elite culinary training but has some anxiety issues that he needs to overcome. The rag-tag group develops a strong relationship as Carmy and new hire Sydney (played by Ayo Edebiri) begin to craft a plan to turn the restaurant into offering a high-end dining experience to customers, leading to other members of the team getting their own chances to get culinary training and meet their potential.
Moss-Bachrach took to his Instagram account to announce the episode and remind viewers that it would be searchable under the title “Gary.” It remains to be seen if the episode is hinting at a spinoff project or simply a one-off episode.
Stay tuned for a trailer for the fifth season of “The Bear,” once that comes to us, and if there is confirmation of more episodes like this or a spinoff, we’ll certainly do follow-ups on that.
