Netflix Enlists Francis Lawrence & Michael Green For 'BioShock' Movie

Netflix is developing a live-action film based on the “BioShock” video game franchise. A previous incarnation had been a passion project for filmmaker Gore Verbinski (“Pirates of The Caribbean“) but eventually dissolved before this latest version of the film surfaced. The streaming service has found its writer and director for the sci-fi horror mash-up project.

It’s been revealed by Deadline that Francis Lawrence has been hired to direct “BioShock” with Michael Green (“Logan,” “Blade Runner 2049“) tasked to pen the script. Certainly, a solid pairing that makes perfect sense on paper given the subject matter. As mentioned in the report, the plan is that once Lawrence wraps on his current film, “Hunger Games: The Ballad of Songbirds & Snakes,” they’ll jump into pre-production for “BioShock.”

“BioShock” takes place in an alternative 1960 where Jack, a survivor of an airplane crash, discovers the underwater city of Rapture, a futuristic city that was built by business magnate Andrew Ryan to be an isolated utopia. The discovery of ADAM, a genetic material that grants superhuman powers, initiated the city’s turbulent decline and led to some horrific creatures that inhabit Rapture.

Lawrence is no stranger to genre projects with credits that include “Constantine,” “Red Sparrow,” “I Am Legend,” and multiple films in “The Hunger Games” franchise. He most recently worked with Netflix on the Jason Momoa fantasy film “Slumberland.”

This isn’t the only video game project in the works at the streamer. They’re also trying to make films such as “Dragon’s Lair” and “The Division” along with television shows based on “Assassin’s Creed” and “Horizon Zero Dawn.”

We’ll certainly be curious to see who they end up casting in the main roles. Also, how close the film will be to its video game counterpart which is beloved by the gaming community.
