'Static Shock': Randy McKinnon To Write The DC Comics Film Produced By Michael B. Jordan & Reginald Hudlin

DC Films has a lot of catch-up to do behind Marvel. Still, now that the Snyderverse is seemingly officially behind them, and films like a rebooted “The Suicide Squad” are on the way, it seems like a new chapter is about to be written in its cinematic history. It’s already been reported that Michael B. Jordan and Reginald Hudlin would be producing a live-action feature film featuring “Static Shock,” a cult superhero from DC Comics and Milestone Comics.

The 1990s comic book had been adapted into an animated series that started airing in 2000. It helped introduce the lesser-known character to a generation of kids that are now adults and likely have their own children now. The animated series focused on Virgil Hawkins, a teenager that gains electromagnetic powers after being exposed to gas and uses these new abilities to become a superhero.

A new update on the comic book project from The Hollywood Reporter has revealed that Warner Bros. is tasking screenwriter Randy McKinnon to write the “Static Shock” script. Randy previously worked with Reginald on the Disney+ football drama “Safety.”

“Static Shock” seems to be part of the studio’s attempt to expand its superhero roster to reflect the global audience alongside things like “Blue Beetle” and a “Superman” reboot that is expected to focus on a black incarnation of the iconic DC Comics character with Ta-Nehisi Coates writing it. Increasing DC’s tent to allow varying superheroes, large and small, to get their own films gives audiences exposure to unique characters instead of recycling the same stuff over and over.

It’s unknown when Warner Bros. hopes to get cameras rolling on “Static Shock,” but with a newly hired writer, they are at least getting the ball rolling. Producer Michael B. Jordan is cutting his teeth as a director on MGM’s “Creed III,” and I wouldn’t be shocked if he’s at least considered as a contender to direct.
