A24 is turning Kane Parsons’ genre-bending found-footage short into a feature film with “The Backrooms,” and some impressive actors are circling the gestating project (the feature directorial debut of Parsons).
Deadline is backing up a recent report from The InSneider that actors Chiwetel Ejiofor (“Eleanor The Great,” “The Old Guard 2”) and Cristin Milioti (“The Penguin,” “Black Mirror”) are in talks to join the sci-fi horror movie in undisclosed roles.
While the original short had a found footage angle, we’re a little in the dark about what Parsons’ feature iteration will be about. So, we’ll have to be patient about plot and character details as a mystery box approach is usually a good way to create interest, and also might be designed to keep twisty/spoilery elements under lock and key as long as possible.
Another attractive aspect of “The Backrooms” is the film’s heavyweight producing team, which will include James Wan’s Atomic Monster (acquired by Blumhouse Pictures), Shawn Levy’s 21 Laps, and Chernin Entertainment (behind the “Planet of The Apes” and “Fear Street” films). Their involvement would be a pretty solid signal that this is going to be something super special.
Parsons will direct from a mysterious script penned by Roberto Patino (“DMZ,” “Westworld,” “Sons of Anarchy”) as the film’s producing team features Levy, Dan Cohen, Dan Levine of 21 Laps, Wan, and Michael Clear for Atomic Monster, and Patino.
If you’re as curious as we about about “The Backrooms,” you can check out the original 90s-set short from Parsons below, which could give audiences an idea of what the feature could be aiming to do.
