Charlize Theron & Channing Tatum Lead New Jonathan Levine Comedy ‘Dance Parents’ After Universal Wins Heated Bidding War

A heated bidding war for the family comedy “Dance Parents” has ended with Universal Pictures securing the film, which will see Charlize Theron and Channing Tatum set to star and produce.

Deadline, which revealed Universal landing the film, adds that Jonathan Levine, who is well-established in the world of studio comedies, is attached to direct “Dance Parents.” After tackling projects such as the cancer dramedy “50/50,” “Warm Bodies,” “The Wackness,” the upcoming David Corenswet-led NFL draft flick “Mr. Irrelevant,” “The Night Before,” and Theron’s political romantic comedy “The Long Shot” that co-starred Levine regular Seth Rogen.

Sadly, plot details are being kept under lock and key for the time being, but the family angle would suggest that we’ll see the two playing parents potentially navigating the world of competitive dance. It remains to be seen if it’ll be taking inspiration or become a parody of the reality television show “Dance Moms.”

What we do know is that screenwriter Meghan Malloy is being tasked to work on the film’s script.

Theron was most recently seen in the Netflix sequel “The Old Guard 2,” played herself in Apple‘s acclaimed comedic streaming series “The Studio,” and will play Circe, the evil sorceress, in Christopher Nolan‘s Greek epic “The Odyssey” that Universal will be releasing July 16, 2026.

If you weren’t aware, like Tatum, Theron, before becoming a big film star, she had started out as a trained dancer. Those skills translated extremely well to the world of action/stunts, and seeing her finally utilize them for this new project is very exciting. Tatum monetized those skills with his “Magic Mike” movies directed by Steven Soderbergh, and was spun off with an extremely popular live strip show version.

The pairing on “Dance Parents” is a long-time coming after the two danced together during a bit at the 2013 Academy Awards, when it was hosted by Seth MacFarlane.
