James Cameron Struggling To Write New ‘Terminator’ Story: “I Don’t Know What To Say That Won’t Be Overtaken By Real Events”

While James Cameron is putting together “Avatar 4” and his gestating WWII drama “Ghosts of Hiroshima,” he is also quietly developing a mysterious “Terminator” project, but as the filmmaker points out, he is having some trouble coming up with a story.

Speaking with CNN about his WWII project and current events, toward the end of the interview, Cameron admitted that the current climate of the dangers of artificial intelligence (a push toward military applications are happening across the globe) and war/nuclear threats (India and Pakistan had another recent conflict) is making it slightly difficult to come up with an entertaining idea set in the “Terminator” universe.

“I’m at a point right now where I have a hard time writing science fiction. I’m tasked with writing a new ‘Terminator’ story. I’ve been unable to get started on that very far because I don’t know what to say that won’t be overtaken by real events. We are living in a science fiction age right now,” Cameron said when asked about the blurring lines between modern reality and science fiction concerning trying to come up with ideas for “Terminator 7.”

If you weren’t aware, Cameron had been the main creative force behind the first two “Terminator” films before those rights slipped through his fingers, only to return as he helped produce/co-write “Terminator: Dark Fate,” leading to some behind-the-scenes tension with longtime pal and “Deadpool” director Tim Miller (who claimed he wouldn’t work with Cameron again after their creative clashes) on the production.

We don’t exactly know what the deal is with this new “Terminator” project and if it’ll act as a direct/spiritual sequel to “Dark Fate” or something else completely, as there had been chatter of another franchise relaunch from Cameron.

“Dark Fate” featured a deviating timeline where a young John Connor was murdered by a Terminator after the events of “T2: Judgement Day,” and the new future leader of the human resistance army that defeats the machines was meant to be Natalia Reyes’ Dani Ramos.
