Writer/director James Gunn is out doing press for his upcoming “Superman” reboot that is heading to theaters in July, and is giving some insight into his last effort for Marvel Studios, “Guardians of The Galaxy 3.”
First, Gunn told Entertainment Weekly that he was against putting Thor in his movie and didn’t have a grasp on the character to begin with, being quite adamant with Marvel that he wasn’t going to cram Thor into his movie. Despite Thor having joined their ranks by the end of “Avengers: Endgame,” he mentioned his objection to the idea in his script notes.

“I said in the script notes: ‘I’m not gonna put him in. I don’t want to have Thor in the Guardians. I don’t want to do a movie with Thor,'” Gunn recalled. “I don’t understand the character that much. I love watching his movies, and I love Chris Hemsworth as a guy. I don’t understand how to write that character.”
Of course, director Taika Waititi ended up taking that bullet for Gunn and Marvel as “Thor: Love & Thunder” used the first act to sever the God of Thunder’s ties to the Guardians (arguably some of the best sequences in the sequel). That team-up was established by The Russo Brothers in “Avengers: Endgame” and had to be eventually addressed in one of the sequels.
That wasn’t the only headache experienced by Gunn, who was fired and rehired on the Marvel flick, as he suggests it was possibly a mistake to include the Adam Warlock tease with his end credit scene in “Guardians of The Galaxy Vol.2.” As he hadn’t exactly planned on paying off that scene by adding the cosmic character in the third movie, who Will Poulter ended up playing.
“I have a philosophy about post-credit scenes,” Gunn said of how he will approach post-credits scenes with his DCU movies. “It’s somewhat related to my own mistakes in my time with Marvel.”
“I did not like what I did in ‘Guardians 2,’ where we set up Adam Warlock and we set up the Guardians of the Galaxy and we set up all this s*** that I didn’t necessarily plan on,” Gunn admittedly told EW. “Well, I guess I kind of planned on fulfilling that [Adam Warlock] promise, but you want to be careful about that. The way a post-credits scene works is a punch to the face, like, ‘Oh my God! Look at this.’ At times when you’re using it just solely to set something up, sometimes you’re screwing yourself over. It was not easy to work Adam Warlock into ‘Guardians 3.’ I loved working with Will, and I liked dealing with the character, but at the end of the day, was he kind of fitting a weird square peg into a round hole? A little bit, yeah.”
“Superman” is expected to be the first of many superhero feature film installments in the recently established DCU, and Gunn has already teased that a brand new “Wonder Woman” movie is currently being written. As for his return to the Marvel Cinematic Universe, don’t hold your breath for that to happen anytime soon, given his role as co-CEO of DC Studios and the likelihood he’s going to keep directing more DC movies.
We still don’t know for sure if the tease at the end of “Guardians of The Galaxy 3” will lead to more adventures, as Rocket Raccoon is now leading the group of cosmic heroes.
