Writer/director Rian Johnson has his third “Knives Out” movie, “Wake Up Dead Man: A Knives Out Mystery,” coming to the BFI London Film Festival in October before its Netflix debut in December, but is already teasing his next project.
During an in-depth chat with Rolling Stone Magazine, Johnson briefly mentioned that he struggled trying to get a sci-fi movie idea made after “Looper,” which has now morphed into a mystery project he’s “developing next.”

“Right after I made ‘Looper,’ I spent several years trying to crack this sci-fi idea that I had. Ultimately could not make it work. I never really got those gears I described to connect. So it just felt like a high concept that didn’t have any innards. But elements of that ended up working their way into the thing that I’m developing next. So, everything comes around,” Johnson said of circling back on a previous film idea that the filmmaker had a tough time putting together.
This comes after TheInSneider (via Coming Soon) claimed back in December that Johnson was putting together “an original sci-fi project.” So, it sounds up-in-the-air for the moment if this new Rian Johnson project is exactly a film or another fun character-driven TV thing.
Johnson recently admitted he didn’t get too far along with his mysterious “Star Wars” trilogy (announced after the release of “Star Wars: The Last Jedi“), stating they didn’t get outlines etched out because he was too busy with original things, such as his “Knives Out” trilogy and two seasons of “Poker Face.” So, we really shouldn’t hold our collective breaths about a return to the galaxy far, far away anytime soon.
Hopefully, when the director is on the promotional tour for “Wake Up Dead Man,” we’ll learn a lot more.
