Of course, Robert will write and direct the next installment, which will focus on the adventures of a “multicultural family.” The film is a “reimagining” to relaunch the franchise to a new generation.

This wouldn’t be shocking as “We Can Be Heroes” focused on a new generation of kids within the universe of “The Adventures of Sharkboy & Lavagirl In 3-D,” along with adding brand new heroes. One assumes some of the same ideas will apply to the next “Spy Kids” film. It’s possible they could do a hard-reboot unless Rodriguez wants to keep the door open for Alexa PenaVega (Carmen Cortez) and Daryl Sabara (Juni Cortez) to reprise their original roles as he had the duo appear in “Machete” and “Machete Kills,” Danny Trejo having played the role of Isador Cortez aka Uncle Machete in the “Spy Kids” franchise.

We’ll have to wait to see if they’ll continue using the Cortez or Wilson families.  When “Spy Kids” will begin shooting is a little unclear as the director is terrifically busy and will soon go to work on the “Star Wars” spin-off, “The Book Of Boba Fett,” alongside Jon Favreau and Dave Filoni. Deadline states that the prodigious Rodriguez has already wrapped production on the Ben Affleck-starring crime thriller “Hypnotic.” Additionally, he is producing a female series reboot of “Zorro,” and is an executive producer on the aforementioned Lucasfilm/Disney+ series, reportedly in production in California under the working title “Buccaneer.”

While nothing has been concrete, Rodriguez has been hopeful that an “Alita: Battle Angel” sequel could be given a shot on Disney+ at some point. [Deadline]
