'Gran Turismo' Trailer: Sony's Racing Pic Hits Theaters This August

Hollywood is reeving-up it’s engines for video game adaptations as “The Last of Us” is doing well for HBO as a second season is already in the works and Universal‘s “Super Mario Bros. Movie” is inching closer to crossing the billion-dollar mark at the global box office. Signally quite the desire to see projects based on various video game IP. With CinemaCon in Las Vegas recently, Sony Pictures was promoting their own upcoming video game project at the big film industry event with “Gran Turismo” from director Neill Blomkamp coming this summer and has led to a new trailer being dropped (See Below) by the studio this week.

Rather than taking cues from movies like Disney‘s “Need For Speed” adaptation that starred Aaron Paul and Michael Keaton, being closer to the actual video game IP, “Gran Turismo” is instead going to be taking inspiration from a true story about Jann Mardenbrough, a gamer that made the jump from the racing game to becoming a real professional driver. Newcomer Archie Madekwe leads a cast that includes David Harbour (“Black Widow“), Orlando Bloom (“Lord of The Rings” trilogy), Djimon Hounsou (“Shazam!“), and Spice Girl memebr Geri Horner (“Crank 2“) is playing Mardenbrough’s mother.

Sony’s official synopsis for the pic reads as follows:

Based on the true story of Jann Mardenborough, the film is the ultimate wish fulfillment tale of a teenage Gran Turismo player whose gaming skills won a series of Nissan competitions to become an actual professional racecar driver.

Blomkamp is notably known for his action hybrid gerne projects such as “District 9,” “Elysium,” “Chappie,” and his recent horror film “Demonic.” The filmmaker is said to be busy working on the “District 10” script with writing partner Terri Tatchell, as there are expectations that Sony will reunite with the creatives for that long-gestating sci-fi sequel.

Filming had been taking place in Budapest, Hungary and only wrapped up in December, showcasing a very slim post-production window with being “Gran Turismo” is set to zoom into theaters on August 11. Quite impressive from Blomkamp to have that kind of turnaround for a major studio film.
