Zach Cregger Seemingly Corroborates ‘Henchmen’ Rumor, Confirms Script Was “Batman Adjacent” DC Universe Film Set In Gotham: “My Favorite Thing I Ever Wrote”

We already know that “Barbarian” and “Weapons” director Zach Cregger is gearing up to tackle a major studio IP with Sony‘s new “Resident Evil” reboot, but it sounds like the filmmaker has confirmed a rumor that he wrote a DC Comics movie script with the working title “Henchmen.”

The director is out promoting “Weapons,” while speaking with outlets like Bloody Disgusting and ComicBook, Cregger dished some minor details about the DC project that seem to fit with some rumblings about its connections to the world of Batman and Gotham City, specifically.

Cregger told BD’s podcast “The Boo Crew” that he is working on a script “set in the DC Universe,” which is described as being a “Batman-adjacent thing.” Adding, “I wrote it and I’m utterly obsessed with it. So one day… I want to make that.”

He further elaborated on the project, revealing how far back he wrote the script, “There was a script I wrote before ‘Barbarian’ that takes place in Gotham City, I think that’s my favorite thing I ever wrote, believe it or not. I don’t know what is going to happen with that. Nobody at Warner Bros. or DC, I haven’t talked to anybody about it. I hope to one day…who knows?”

Previously, online rumblings (apparently via Daniel Richtman) have zeroed in on the idea that the “Henchmen” script could be acting as a reintroduction to the Joker and Harley Quinn dynamic. That one detail could explain WHY there hasn’t been any movement on the project that pre-dates “Barbarian” and the reasoning behind WB/DC Studios not rushing to work with Cregger (becoming in-demand as of late).

However, given the DCU reset (we’re still waiting to hear if “Barbie” star Margot Robbie will be recast or not after appearing in James Gunn‘s “The Suicide Squad“) and poor reception of “The Joker” sequel (reportedly lost Warner Bros. $150-200 million after ballooning costs), it is really hard to see where/when this project comes together, or at all.

That said, Cregger is focusing on “Resident Evil” next, with Austin Abrams said to be up for a lead role in it, and it doesn’t sound like anyone is looking to resurrect “Henchmen” anytime soon.
