Julia Garner is having a bit of a moment thanks to theatrical releases of “The Fantastic Four: First Steps” and Zach Cregger‘s new original horror flick “Weapons.” She had been attached to star in a gestating Madonna biopic that the singer/actress/director was putting together for Universal Pictures. We now know where Garner stands on the project, at the moment, after rumblings of it being scrapped.
While promoting “Weapons” on the “SmartLess” podcast (hosted by her former “Ozark” co-star Jason Bateman alongside Sean Hayes and Will Arnett), Garner shared a status update on her long-gestating Madonna biopic that has the actress playing a younger version of the iconic pop star exploring her rise to fame.

“Yeah, I mean, that’s supposed to still happen,” Garner responded when asked if the movie was still on her docket of would-be projects.
Garner also talked about the audition process and pushing herself to do the role, despite not being a trained dancer, “I kind of just wanted to see if I could do it, because I wasn’t a trained dancer and I had to learn how to dance and then dance in front of her and convince her that I can dance, basically, and sing. And sing with her!”
It’s a little weird that they’re still working on the feature project with a competing limited series at Netflix in the works from Shawn Levy and his production banner 21 Laps, which could make a movie a little redundant, but not the first time we’ve seen competing projects and the two could have varying takes on the events of the pop star’s life.
I guess we’ll just have to wait and see if one of the projects ultimately cancels the other one or not. In the meantime, you can listen to the full chat with Garner on the podcast below.
