Alison Brie Disputes Rumor ‘Masters Of The Universe’ Remake Is Going To Be “Serious”

After decades of trying to get off the ground, Amazon MGM Studios finally greenlit a new “Masters of the Universe” movie after the film rights bounced from Warner Bros., Sony, and Netflix, which is being helmed by Travis Knight, replacing The Nee Brothers during the most recent shake-up.

From the casting and set photos, it feels like the remake is taking a page from “Barbie” (another Mattel property) by going in a comedic route, but there had been chatter online “Masters of The Universe” could have a serious tone which is now being refuted by actress Alison Brie, who plays a new version of franchise villain and Skeletor cohort, Evil-Lyn (previously portrayed by Meg Foster in the 1987 flick from Cannon Films).

While promoting her upcoming body horror movie “Together,” that stars her real-life hubby Dave Franco, the actress told Colldier, “Who said it’s leaning a little more serious?” Indicating the remake is indeed going to lean hard into the campiness of the original cartoon series.

Others on the call sheet include Nicholas Galitzine in the main role of Prince Adam/He-Man, Camila Mendes playing Teela, Jared Leto (“TRON: Ares”) is Keldor/Skeletor, Idris Elba (“The Suicide Squad”) as Man-At-Arms, Sam C. Wilson as Trap Jaw, and Morena Baccarin (“Deadpool”) as Teela’s mother, the Sorceress of Castle Grayskull.

“Masters of the Universe” normally takes place on the planet of Eternia, with the heroic Prince Adam using a magic sword to transform himself into He-Man to fight the evil forces of Skeletor. However, as set photos have revealed, we’ll see these characters interacting on modern Earth, although hopefully less cringeworthy than the 1987 film that also did that (but did so due to limited budget reasons).

Knight cut his teeth in the world of animation with projects like the underrated Japan-set fantasy tale “Kubo & The Two Strings,” before tackling the world of movies based on toys with his “Transformers” spinoff soft-reboot “Bumblebee” at Paramount starring Hailee Steinfeld and John Cena. Another of his films heading to theaters is going to be the stop-motion animated fantasy movie “Wildwood,” expected to be released sometime in 2026, and is from Laika.

Chris Butler is credited for writing the latest draft of the script for “Master of the Universe,” who previously worked with Knight on “Kubo” and “Wildwood.” Like Knight, he’s an animation director behind other Laika stop-motion movies such as “Missing Link” and “ParaNorman.”

Amazon MGM Studios is expected to release “Masters of the Universe’ on June 5, 2026, and audiences can watch “Together” in theaters starting tomorrow.
