Judd Apatow Comedies ‘The 40-Year-Old Virgin’ & ‘Trainwreck’ Returning To Theaters August 22 Celebrating Anniversaries

Universal Pictures has announced they’ll be celebrating the respective anniversaries for the Judd Apatow comedies “The 40-Year-Old Virgin” and “Trainwreck” with theatrical re-releases of the two films on August 22.

The studio has also dropped two trailers with “The 40-Year-Old Virgin” turning 20 and “Trainwreck” marking 10 years. Apatow, the films’ director, made a huge splash with the former and helped launch the film career of Steve Carell (along with boosting the comedic profiles of Paul Rudd and a very young Seth Rogen) while collaborating with screenwriter/star Amy Schumer and helped showcase Bill Hader‘s talents beyond “Saturday Night Live” (they also worked together on “Superbad,” and “Forgetting Sarah Marshall“).

Of course, Apatow has since become quite the steward for the American comedy community, working on the documentary “The Zen Diaries of Garry Shandling” (after being a writer on HBO‘s acclaimed late-night spoof “The Larry Sanders Show” and developing a close relationship with Shandling over the years) and most recently participating in “Pee-wee as Himself” (after directing the late comedian Paul Rubens in “Pee-wee’s Big Holiday” for Netflix).

While modern studio comedies have slowed down in recent years, pivoting to streaming platforms, it’s hard not to notice that the films of Apatow still are as popular as ever, even if not every comedic beat or joke (of their era) has aged well. His other well-received films distributed by Universal include “Knocked Up,” the midlife crisis follow-up “This Is 40,” and “The King of Staten Island.”
