Matt Reeves Says ‘The Batman Part II’ Is “Grounded” & “Epic Story About Deeper Corruption” In Gotham City

The Batman Part II” finally has a script as director Matt Reeves and co-writer Mattson Tomlin (“BRZRKR”) have recently handed in their draft, and there are some minor details being shared by the filmmaker.

SFX Magazine (via ComingSoon) recently talked to Reeves about the sequel, where he briefly teased a greater exploration of “corruption” in Gotham City. While many fans have assumed this could mean we’re getting closer to a cinematic take on The Court of Owls (a secret society that is the puppet masters of Gotham and uses The Talons to assassinate threats), the filmmaker reiterated that the project is going to be “grounded” and they’ll “never go full fantastical.”

“It’s going to dig into the epic story about deeper corruption, and it goes into places he couldn’t even anticipate in the first one,” Reeves said, of what direction the new movie is going and likely will continue seeing how the underworld of Gotham City operates.

While Reeves admits that they’ll “never go full fantastical” in terms of how some of Batman’s villains and characters are portrayed in the movies. “What was important to me was to find a way to take these pop icons, these mythic characters that everybody knows, and translate it so that Gotham feels like a place in our world…It’s meant to feel quite grounded.”

There had been a huge call to see Reeves tackle a new iterations of Mr. Freeze or Two-Face alongside The Court of Owls on the big-screen, but given the more sci-fi/supernatural aspects of those character, they’d likely have to make changes and tweak to make them believable villains in this universe, as you would assume with others too, as Reeves’ take on Gotham City isn’t as flamboyant or puply as say what James Gunn is doing with the mainline DCU.

That said, we’ll have to wait to see what Reeves is ultimately going to do with “The Batman Part II,” as there are expectations that Robert Pattinson, Zoë Kravitz, Jeffrey Wright, Colin Farrell, and Andy Serkis will return.

Although we’re unsure if Barry Keoghan‘s Joker will be part of the sequel or not, we have to guess that there is some pressure to include Arkham Asylum after the series’ attempt fizzled out and tapping into the actor’s relationship with Farrell (the two working on “The Banshees of Inisherin” and “Killing of A Sacred Deer” previously).

As casting ramps up, we’ll learn a bit more about what the aim is going to be and what new characters will appear.
