Production is underway on “Buddy,” a new ambitious horror film directed by Casper Kelly that has landed quite a high-profile lead actress, as Cristin Milioti has been selected for a main role in the mysterious project revealed by a report from Deadline.
Kelly is co-writing the script alongside Jaime King (“World’s Best”), who worked on the bulk of the episodes for Marvel’s “Jessica Jones” series. However, we’ll have to wait for concrete details on the project as it is barebones for the moment.
The assumption here is that “Buddy” could end up a hybrid horror-comedy given Kelly’s long-established career in the genre with projects like “Aqua Teeen Hunger Force,” “Archer,” “Onion News Network,” “Squidbillies,” the absurdist “Too Many Cooks,” and the dark horror comedy “Adult Swim Yule Log.”
He even contributed to Panos Cosmatos‘ “Mandy” with the Cheddar Goblin segment that plays on a TV, harkening back to the wild product ads geared toward kids. This string of projects from Kelly gives us the impression that “Buddy” could have some really weird and fun comedic beats to it.
Cristin Milioti, of course, is rightfully getting praise for her recent work on the HBO comic book crime show “The Penguin” with Emmy and Golden Globe nominations for the breakout performance as the ruthless gangster Sofia Falcone, but isn’t a stranger to the world of comedy. Her credits include “Black Mirror” (leading the extremely popular U.S.S. Callister episodes), the genre-bending rom-com “Palm Springs” opposite funny man Andy Samberg, Noah Hawley‘s “Fargo,” “The Venture Brothers,” “How I Met Your Mother,” and briefly appeared in Martin Scorsese‘s comedic biopic “The Wolf of Wall Street.”
The actress recently joined the Elizabeth Olsen-led FX series “Seven Sisters” from director Sean Deakins (“The Iron Claw”), and earlier in the year had been circling a lead role in A24‘s “The Backrooms“ that would see her co-starring with British actor Chiwetel Ejiofor.
BoulderLight Pictures, one of the film’s production companies, was previously behind “Friendship” and “Companion.”
