'Impeachment: American Crime Story' Trailer: 1990s Scandal Returns

FX has dropped a new trailer for their latest installment of “American Crime Story” with “Impeachment” pulling from real-life events just like they did with “The People vs. O.J. Simpson.” This time focusing on the widespread media circus of the President Bill Clinton sex scandal that dominated headlines and news coverage for what seemed like the latter half of the 1990s.

Clinton was revealed to have lied about a sexual relationship with White House intern Monica Lewinsky leading to the impeachment process. His infidelity became a hot-button topic at the time more than perjuring himself, given his history of sexual scandals throughout his political career.

Here is the official synopsis from FX:

“Impeachment: American Crime Story is a limited series examining the national crisis that led to the first impeachment of a U.S. President in over a century. It tells this story through the eyes of the women at the center of the events: Monica Lewinsky (Beanie Feldstein), Linda Tripp (Sarah Paulson), and Paula Jones (Annaleigh Ashford). All three were thrust into the public spotlight during a time of corrosive partisan rancor, shifting sexual politics, and a changing media landscape. The series shows how power lifts some and disposes of others in the halls of our most sacred institutions.”

Clive Owen‘s Clinton performance is another chameleon-like take on a character with the help of impressive makeup. Fellow acting peers Jared Leto and Colin Farrell also use heavy makeup to amplify their performances in upcoming films such as “House of Gucci” and “The Batman,” respectively.

I think this version of “American Crime Story” is really interesting as most people my age lived through this and the O.J. Simpson trial; in those days, you’d really only get movie-of-the-week adaptations of the various scandals and oddball news stories. Nothing memorable or noteworthy. Seeing FX take such an impressive interest in flushing out well-known events is certainly an ambitious undertaking and exceptionally impressive to boot to make it compelling for a second time.
