‘The Batman’ Villain Penguin Getting HBO Max Spinoff Series; Colin Farrell May Star

Matt Reeves (“Cloverfield,” “Dawn of The Planet of The Apes,” “War For The Planet of The Apes“) is starting to usher in a new era of the iconic Caped Crusader as his new Bruce Wayne, Robert Pattinson (“Tenet“), is leading “The Batman” as part of a new trilogy and Reeves is also behind the “Gotham PD” series at HBO Max that takes place before the events of the upcoming movie focusing on the city’s corrupt police force.

Well, it looks like another DC Comics series connected to “The Batman” is in very early development.

Variety reports that HBO Max is putting together an untitled show focusing on the rise of Oswald Cobblepot, aka, The Penguin in the criminal underworld of Gotham, from writer Lauren LeFranc (“Chuck,” “Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D.,” “Impulse“) with Warner Bros. Television, Matt Reeves, and Dylan Clark producing.

They are adding that Irish actor Colin Farrell, who plays Penguin in “The Batman,” has been approached to reprise the role of the Batman rogue but hasn’t officially signed on.

Farrell is unrecognizable in the film’s trailer and photos, thanks to some impressive makeup, which might give the film a well-deserved Oscar nomination. The actor has worked with HBO in the past with the second season of the gritty crime series “True Detective,” and his return might come down to whether or not he wants to endure a return to the makeup chair for the length of a series shoot.

Warner Bros. Pictures is still going gaga over Gotham vigilantes with DECU projects such as “The Flash” featuring both Michael Keaton and Ben Affleck incarnations confirmed to appear along with a “Batgirl” film heading to HBO Max starring Leslie Grace (“In The Heights“) as Barbara Gordon and J.K. Simmons back as Commissioner Jim Gordon.

“The Batman,” releasing on March 4, 2022, is said to be taking place in an “Earth 2” universe according to DC Films’ Walter Hamada, giving the impression Matt Reeves has his own splinter cinematic corner separate from the regular DCEU projects allowing some creative breathing room.
