After DC Studios‘ “Supergirl” was only able to muster a soft $38 million domestic opening over the weekend (equally unimpressive $68 million globally), the latest DCU installment could end up becoming a $100 million loss for Warner Bros. as the DC Comics movie helmed by Craig Gillespie (“Cruella”) has struggled to entice audiences after a string of mixed to bad reviews citing a messy film and muddy third act.
In a report from Variety, they’re highlighting that what the movie is projected to earn likely means a rather large loss for the studio, as “Supergirl” could end up in the range of a loss between $100-120 million, depending on final numbers and being able to hit $200-210 million globally in estimated final projections (which could be a feat of it’s own as the summer’s busy slate will make things harder to hold onto audiences’ attention). Another source cited in the trade report believes it could be closer to $80-85 million; either way, the potential of a sequel has likely been tossed out the window.

Mind you, this wouldn’t be the first DC film to have issues attracting an audience size to overcome the scale of these event film budgets, things like “Black Adam,” “The Flash,” “Wonder Woman 1984,” “Shazam! Fury of The Gods,” “Blue Beetle,” the infamous “Catwoman,” and Ryan Reynolds-led “Green Lantern” (a “Batgirl” movie was completely scrapped as a tax write-off before audiences even got a chance to view it).
These solo movie hiccups at the box office thankfully don’t mean the studio is scrapping Milly Alcock as Kara (often said to be the highlight of the film, as the direction and script are getting dinged) as she’ll be seen next summer in James Gunn‘s “Superman” follow-up “Man of Tomorrow” as supervillain Brainiac finally makes his big-screen debut after nearly being the big-bad in Tim Burton‘s never-made 1990s reboot starring Nicolas Cage. DC Studios’ Peter Safran had recently revealed that Supergirl would be “a big part” in what comes after “Man of Tomorrow.” We’re still in the dark if that is a “Justice League/Gang” film, the gestating “Teen Titans,” a “Wonder Woman” reboot, something else cosmic-related (we have to imagine that a “Green Lantern” movie could be in the cards with Kara’s involvement), or a third “Superman” installment is a tad unclear.
While said not to be directly set within the mainline DCU setting, the next release from the studio is the Mike Flanagan-penned “Clayface,” as the October pic features the tragic body-horror villain from Batman’s rogues gallery, but will be treated more like a standalone project, and we’re sure the studio is sighing with some minor relief that they spend much less on that movie (reportedly in the $40-45 million range), easing the risk involved.
