Last month, we were reminded by “The Matrix Resurrections” actress Jessica Henwick that we hadn’t had a concrete update on the status of a gestating “Matrix 5” from the film’s writer and director, Drew Goddard (after the project was announced back in 2024). Henwick had been hopeful to read a script and was open to a return to her new “Matrix” universe character, Bugs. However, we’ve finally heard from Goddard about where he currently is with the Warner Bros. legacy film.
Speaking with ScreenRant to help promote the buzzy sci-fi comedy “Project Hail Mary” (he penned the script, which he adapted from the Andy Weir novel), Goddard said the cyberpunk sequel is “still in the works. I’m in my writing cave writing. I don’t know how long I’ll be in that writing cave, but whenever I come out, I’ll have news to share.”
Maybe not the juiciest update from Goddard, but we’re sure fans hearing the project is still active is better than hearing it’s been nixed. Taking their time might not be the worst thing after Lana Wachowski‘s “The Matrix Resurrections” didn’t exactly necessitate more films, but did way better with critics than “The Matrix Revolutions.”
If you’re unfamiliar with the previous four movies, “The Matrix” takes place many years after a brutal global war between humans and artificial intelligence, as the machines ultimately won, using the remaining human population as a power source, and are lulled into that role via a digital world obscuring their reality.
We should note that Goddard has had a string of bad luck in Hollywood having missed out on overseeing the original “Daredevil” series at Netflix, nearly tackled Sony‘s never-made “Sinister Six” film connected to the Andrew Garfield era of “Spider-Man,” and being attached to make an “X-Force” film (expected to star Ryan Reynolds‘ Deadpool) at 20th Century Fox before Disney‘s merger squashed it.
We’re going to be more optimistic with “Matrix 5” as WB seems hellbent on keeping the franchise going, with or without The Wachowskis being the main creative force behind this follow-up.
