The Neo-Western genre is hotter than ever thanks to film/TV creatives like Taylor Sheridan, and with that, a new film called “Outside Man” is combining genre elements with Ice Cube (“Boyz In The Hood”) and Tommy Lee Jones (“No Country For Old Men”) being enlisted to lead the new movie from writer/director Brian Helgeland.
Helgeland’s past directorial efforts include “Payback,” “A Knight’s Tale,” and the Tom Hardy British twin gangster flick “Legend.” This is also a reunion as Jones previously worked with the writer/director on the blue-collar thriller “Finestkind.”
The producing team assembled includes Jillian Share and Jen Gorton at Teton Ridge Entertainment, with Cube and Jeff Kwatinetz producing for Cube Vision, and Bill Gerber also producing. Meanwhile, the packaged project is now out to buyers this week.
A logline for “Outside Man” as mentioned by Deadline in their report:
“Follows a former Chicago mob enforcer (Cube), who, after being released from prison, is a man intent on changing his life. Disappearing into rural Texas, he finds work under a skilled furniture craftsman and retired Texas Ranger Gus Wanamaker (Jones). As Ruben and Gus form an unlikely friendship, that bond is jeopardized when both men’s pasts threaten to catch up with them.”
Some of Helgeland’s writing credits in the past are “Assassins,” “L.A. Confidential,” “Conspiracy Theory,” “Mystic River,” Tony Scott’s “Man on Fire,” Ridley Scott‘s “Robin Hood,” John Woo‘s remake of his action flick “The Killer,” and “Green Zone.” The veteran screenwriter is also working on a new “Cleopatra” movie, Mel Gibson‘s remake of the blood-soaked western “The Wild Bunch,” and James Wan‘s remake of the Korean thriller “The Gangster, The Cop, The Devil.”
We’ll be curious to see if Helgeland is going to recruit other well-known acting talent for supporting roles in “Outside Man.”
