After previously working together on the action comedy ‘Mr. & Mrs. Smith,” actress Angelina Jolie and director Doug Liman are looking to reunite for a new spy thriller at Universal Pictures after landing the package deal.
The news comes to us from The Hollywood Reporter, as the outlet is adding that the script hails from “Collide” and “xXx: Return of Xander Cage” screenwriter F. Scott Frazier.
If you weren’t aware, Liman has a relationship with Universal, having helped launch their lucrative Jason Bourne franchise after directing 2002’s “The Bourne Identity” (Edward Berger has been said to be wanted for the next installment).
Of course, the former “Tomb Raider” actress isn’t a stranger to the action genre, having recently worked on Chloé Zhao‘s MCU pic “Eternals” and the Taylor Sheridan-directed wildfire thriller “Those Who Wish Me Dead.” She’ll be seen next in Alice Winocour‘s Paris Fashion Week drama “Couture,” which is heading to the Toronto International Film Festival next month as we wait for an announcement concerning a domestic release date. Another project on the horizon is Marc Forster‘s hostage pic “Anxious People” that’ll see her co-star alongside “White Lotus” breakout Aimee Lou Wood.
Liman is coming off directorial efforts such as Jake Gyllenhaal‘s “Road House” remake (the director had a dust-up with Amazon MGM Studios over the handling of the film’s release and wouldn’t be returning for the sequel), and helmed the Apple Original Films heist comedy “The Instigators” starring Matt Damon and Casey Affleck.
Despite attaching himself to “The Initiative,” Liman is still expected to make the Tom Cruise underwater action flick “Deeper” (had been up for auction looking for a studio home with a hefty pricetage reportedly in the $200 million range) that sees the action star co-star alongside Ana de Armas (“Ballerina”), and there is some slim hope that their “Edge of Tomorrow” sequel will finally get in front of cameras.
We can’t wait to hear who will end up co-starring with Angelina Jolie in the spy thriller.
