“Shang-Chi” star Simu Liu is finally going to return to the MCU after a years long absence for The Russo Brothers‘ “The Avengers: Doomsday” this December and is lining up his next genre role with Xavier Gens‘ upcoming sci-fi thriller “Homewrecker.”
The casting update hails from Deadline, as Liu is set to join Allison Williams (“Get Out”), who has been the face of the “M3GAN” franchise at Blumhouse, and on-the-rise “Landman” actress Michelle Randolph. With the new pic being compared to Dan Trachtenberg‘s character-driven “10 Cloverfield Lane,” that featured bunker and a deranged man played by John Goodman under the belief he is protecting his two young guests from instant death if they venture outside. That’s not it, as local French actress Anaïs Parello (“Under Paris”) is reunting with Gens as well on the movie that is set to begin shooting this month.

An official synopsis for “Homewrecker” from an original scirpt penned by Elisa Bell (“Vegas Vacation”) and Travis Gordon:
“During a heart-breaking domestic revelation, three star-crossed Americans are suddenly forced to work together to survive a terrifying unexplained global event that threatens to destroy life as they know it.”
If you weren’t already aware, Gens is a French genre filmmaker known for films such as the Netflix Paris-set shark creature feature “Under Paris” (“Crawl” director Alexandre Aja is being tasked to helm a sequel), the gory French countryside horror pic “Frontier(s),” Hollywood’s first attempt to make a “Hitman” movie based on the popular video game starring Timothy Olyphant (“Justified,” Alien: Earth”) as Agent 47, and the underrated NYC nuclear-apocalypse surivial thriller “The Divide” that had Michael Biehn (“Aliens,” “Terminator”) as a doomsday prepper that reclutantly helps a group of desperate misfists stay alive during the fallout.
While Destin Daniel Cretton and Liu have confirmed that “Shang-Chi 2” is in active development at Marvel Studios, we’re more likely going to see the character again in the “Doomsday” follow-up “The Avengers: Secret Wars,” which is expected to go in front of cameras after “Homewrecker” completes principal photography in France (casting announcements for the MCU event flick is expected to be made closer to that production start or possibly at this year’s San Diego Comic-Con as the studio is reportedly making their grand return).
A producing team assembled for the new Gens feature film consists of Denise Di Novi (“Little Women”), Margaret French Isaac (“The Fan”), and Oliver Scherick for Di Novi Pictures, with John Zois (“Greenland”) and Warren Goz (“The Marksman”) producing for Parallel 42 Entertainment. Alongside executive producers such as Michael Rothstein and Samuel Hall at north.five.six. (“Regretting You”), Williams, Randolph and Zach Book.
“Homewrecker” is likely going to be one to keep an eye on as audiences have been craving original genre-beinding projects, and this one feels like it may end up one that connects and ends up doing well if it’s as creepy as something like “The Divide” (might share some minor elements/beats).
