Filmmaker Harmony Korine (“Spring Breakers”) has been well-established as leaning toward material that is specifically designed to shock and disturb audiences going back to films such as “Kids” (a cautionary tale set in NYC he wrote for Larry Clark) alongside subsequent directorial efforts “Gummo” and “Trash Humpers.” Korine’s latest pic, “Baby Invasion,” is set to combine the world of violent first-person shooter video games with the unnerving assistance of artificial intelligence to make the film.
A trailer for “Baby Invasion” (featuring music from Burial) has made its way online via EDGLRD, a reference to the pejorative slang “edge lord” (refers to someone who posts dark and sometimes sociopathic material online for larks and shock value), and the footage certainly leans into a vibe that feels like it was crafted and inspired by various murky internet rabbit holes.
The footage presented here in the “Baby Invasion” trailer sort of feels like it’s taking some of its visual cues from films like “Chappie” and “Hardcore Henry,” the latter also using a first-person camera perspective with outrageous video-game-level violence and action.
An official logline of the film from EDGLRD:
An ultra-realistic, multiplayer FPS game follows a group of mercenaries using baby faces as avatars through the use of AI. Tasked with entering mansions of the rich and powerful, players must explore every rabbit hole before time runs out. As players navigate this dark web-leaked game, the boundaries between the digital and the real world blur.
“Baby Invasion” previously debuted last year at the Venice Film Festival and is set to hit video-on-demand on March 21, so the audience won’t have to wait too long before getting their mitts on the new Korine film.
