Acclaimed Italian filmmaker Luca Guadagnino (“Queer,” “Challengers”) is prepping his next feature film, “Artificial,” after pivoting from DC Studios‘ “Sgt. Rock,” and a new casting update reveals who is currently in the mix to play the role of Elon Musk.
There is word from Deadline that comedic actor Ike Barinholtz, of “The Studio” and “Blockers,” is in the mix to play Musk in the film that explores the tech world when OpenAI fired and rehired CEO Sam Altman.
Actor Andrew Garfield, who recently worked with Guadagnino on “After The Hunt,” is set to lead the film as the controversial tech executive. Others on the call sheet are recent Best Supporting Actor Oscar nominee Yura Borisov from “Anora,” and Cooper Koch, with Monica Barbaro (“A Complete Unknown”) still said to be in talks for a role as well (but hasn’t closed a deal).
Barinholtz plays a fictional studio executive in the Seth Rogen satirical send-up Apple streaming series on Hollywood’s inner workings, and the over-the-top personalities that oversee the studio system, which could help inform his take on Musk. As the polarizing billionaire firebrand certainly has a bunch of weird ticks and oddball ways of thinking (would fit like a glove as a wacky character in “The Studio”), leading to his bizarre endorsement of fascist and authoritarian sentiments before ultimately exiting the Trump Administration (while sporting a black eye in the Oval Office), all while amassing great wealth with direct help from U.S. taxpayers.
Guadagnino exploring the tech-bro world feels like a perfect entry point for the director to comment on modern American society, and we can’t wait to see how the pic turns out.
