Zach Cregger is quickly becoming a filmmaker that audiences are keeping an eye on after delivering provocative original horror films with the one-two punch of “Barbarian” and “Weapons,” and he’s now confirming a previous report that a spinoff film connected to the latter is indeed in the works at Warner Bros. and New Line Cinema.
Beloved horror outlet Fangoria got to speak with Cregger about “Weapons” and the subject of the spinoff focused on Aunt Gladys, played by actress Amy Madigan, was brought up with the director confirming that it is not only happening but that he had the idea even before “Weapons” came out (potentially knowing what he had on his hands beforehand).
“It is real, and I’ve been talking to Warner Bros. about it. There’s a story, and I’m pretty excited about it. It’s not bulls***,” Cregger said of his Aunt Gladys spinoff. “I was ready. I had it kind of in my pocket before the movie came out.”
We’ll have to be patient about Cregger’s “Weapons” spinoff because he’s gearing up to shoot his “Resident Evil” reboot soon with Austin Abrams (“Weapons,” “The Walking Dead”) and Paul Walter Hauser (“The Fantastic Four: First Steps”) in roles. He’s also got an original sci-fi movie called “Flood” on deck as well after completing the script, something that he’s hyped up as being better than his previous two efforts.
Speaking of “Resident Evil,” he was quick to point out he’s not using existing characters from the franchise, and it is sort of taking place in the world of Capcom‘s “Resident Evil 2,” giving us more of an idea of how his survival horror flick will take from the original games (not as much as fans would be expecting).
“I’m not telling Leon’s story. You know what I mean? I’m not using any of the characters from the games. I’m telling my story that exists in the world of ‘Resident Evil 2.’ You could play 2 and never know that the events of my story are happening right over there, but they are…”I’m following the rules, but I’m not claiming any key canon characters because we have those in the games.”
That’s not entirely shocking because the Paul W.S. Anderson movie and subsequent sequels focused on Milla Jovovich‘s Alice, a character created for the movies and not from the games. So, not such a foreign idea for “Resident Evil.”
We can’t wait to see what Cregger has in store for audiences, so stay tuned for further updates on his gestating projects.
