Jesse Plemons Calls Alejandro González Iñárritu’s ‘Digger’ Starring Tom Cruise A “Modern-Day ‘Dr. Stranglove'”

I think it would be fair to say most were taken aback when it was announced that Oscar-winning filmmaker Alejandro González Iñárritu, of “The Revenant” and “Birdman” fame, would be linking up with mega-star Tom Cruise for his latest English-language feature effort, “Digger.” While we’ve been kept in the dark for months, the film’s first-look teaser trailer only added more questions than answered them, however, an actor from it is giving us more clues to work with.

One of Cruise’s co-stars in “Digger,” Jesse Plemons (“Bugonia”) is sharing some minor insights with Variety into the mysterious project comparing it to a modern iteration of Stanley Kubrick‘s iconic atomic doomsday satire “Dr. Strangelove,” and the actor also gave his glowing impression on the film’s script alongside teasing a special performance coming from Cruise.

“It’s one of the strangest, funniest, most tragic scripts I’ve read,” Plemons recently told Variety of the highly-anticipated but secretive pic. “There’s a kind of modern-day ‘Dr. Strangelove’ thing, and then it becomes something else entirely…Getting to see Tom just go for it, not in a death-defying action way but fully showing what an incredible actor he is, that was thrilling.”

This “Dr. Strangelove” comparison was often used last year to describe Paul Thomas Anderson‘s Oscar contender “One Battle After Another,” so a rather great endorsement from Plemons and potentially a sign that the movie will indeed be set in a heightened satirical world, akin to something like “Birdman.” Although, we’re unclear if “Digger” will also feature specific world/domestic politics as those films did.

The two actors have some impressive company among the cast of “Digger” that includes Sandra Hüller, John Goodman, Riz Ahmed, Emma D’Arcy, Sophie Wilde, Michael Stuhlbarg, Robert John Burke, and Burn Gorman.

“Digger” is set for release from Warner Bros. (as part of a new overall deal with Cruise) on October 2 of this year, and we’re sure that some answers could be revealed in future promotional materials like the film’s full trailer.
