“Avatar” franchise creator and director James Cameron had prepared audiences that, depending on Disney/20th Century Studios‘ feelings on the box office success of “Avatar: Fire & Ash” (took a big dip from the “Avatar: The Way of Water” earnings) and the financial backing of increasingly expensive installments in the Pandora saga. Cameron is now opening the door for some hope for “Avatar 4” after being apprehensive about sticking around.
A social media post by ScreenRant from the Saturn Awards over the weekend has a quote from Cameron stating that “Avatar 4” happening is “very likely.” Adding that the filmmaker is going to consider audience feedback for the next installment.

While there were a bunch of sequences filmed for “Avatar 4” during the production of “Avatar: Fire & Ash,” which explains the set photos of Oscar-winner Michelle Yeoh (cast years ago) playing a human scientist, and why she didn’t show up in the last two installments. It doesn’t hurt that the Disney company is in a new era of transition with Bob Iger being replaced by Josh D’Amaro as CEO; goal posts for the sequel may have been moved.
We’ll have to be a little more patient as we get more official word of the fate of “Avatar 4” and “Avatar 5” as Cameron is trying to put together a slew of other projects, such as Paramount‘s “Terminator 7” with his pal David Ellison running the studio, his WWII atomic bomb drama “Ghosts of Hiroshima,” the dark fantasy team-up action flick “The Devils,” and has mused in the past about getting Disney to greenlit a sequel to “Alita: Battle Angel.”
Until we hear more concrete updates from Disney or Cameron, we’ll chalk this new quote to being an optimistic glimmer of hope for “Avatar 4.”
James Cameron has yet to make a decision on whether there will be an Avatar 4, but he says it’s “very likely.” And he will be taking audience feedback into consideration! #SaturnAwards pic.twitter.com/1MNAF5dNZx
