‘Top Gun 40th Anniversay’ Trailer: Tom Cruise’s Hit Fighter Pilot Flicks Back In Theaters On May 13

What is better than one Tom Cruise action-packed movie? How about two of them? Well, that is what audiences will be getting next month with Paramount Pictures‘ “Top Gun 40th Anniversary” screenings, as you’ll be able to experience the original Tony Scott-directed film alongside Joseph Kosinski‘s more recent follow-up “Top Gun: Maverick” in theaters.

Cruise plays Pete “Maverick” Mitchell, a talented but undisciplined fighter pilot who needs to overcome his short temper to become one of the best military pilots in the world after he’s enlisted to participate in Top Gun, which is designed to determine the best of the best. In the sequel, Maverick is looking toward his final days in the Navy as he’s chosen to help train a group of hot-shot pilots to complete a suicide mission overseas.

This super-exciting re-release of the first two “Top Gun” films comes after it was finally made official at Paramount’s recent CinemaCon presentation that Top Gun 3” is indeed in official development, with Cruise set to return after previous talk of the project being in the works, and co-stars like Glen Powell signaling their return as well.

However, we’re still waiting on who will end up directing the third installment, as Kosinski is expected to make his “Miami Vice” reboot next (Austin Butler and Michael B. Jordan named as leads with a script from Dan Gilroy) and is trying to get a grounded UFO movie off the ground as well. But has teased his involvement in the past, calling it “one last ride.”

Christopher McQuarrie is co- writing the “Top Gun” script with “Maverick” co-scribe Ehren Kruger, so we could imagine that McQuarrie might be enlisted for directing duties after working with Cruise on the last four “Mission: Impossible” films alongside “Jack Reacher.” Then again, McQuarrie, Paramount, and mega-producer Jerry Bruckheimer haven’t said if he’ll ultimately be replacing Kosinski or not.
