This week sees Marvel‘s first big reworking of the Foxverse with their “Fantastic Four” reboot from Matt Shakman in cinemas, and there now seems to be a lot of renewed attention being placed on the big “X-Men” reboot, which is currently being penned by Michael Lesslie (“Macbeth”).
There are some new quotes from Feige via Nerdist, not only officially confirming Jake Schreier (“Thunderbolts”) is directing “X-Men” (after “Black Panther 3” director Ryan Coogler did that a few weeks back) but going on to praise the director after their experience working with him on “Thunderbolts” suggesting he’s able to tap into the pulse of a “younger demographic” as their mutant reboot is expected to be very “youth-oriented” when it comes to story and casting.
“Yeah, it’s official. Jake Schreier is doing ‘X-Men’ for us. Very lucky, and we’re very, very lucky to have him, and very excited to have him. And so we’re beginning. It’s all starting now. Script’s underway. Jake’s an incredibly smart guy, and he’s an incredibly talented filmmaker,” Feige said of their new “X-Men” director.
“We had a great experience with him on Thunderbolts, and if you saw that movie, what he did with those character interactions, he also has his pulse on, shall we say, a younger demographic. Not, he’s younger than me, for sure, but he’s tapped into that in a way that I think is important. It was important for Thunderbolts, much more important for X-Men, because ‘X-Men,’ as it was in the comics, will be a very youth-oriented, focused, and cast movie.”
That “youthful” sentiment for the superhero project could explain Lesslie’s involvement, as he previously wrote Lionsgate‘s “The Hunger Games: The Ballad of Songbirds & Snakes,” another franchise that is built on young talent and characters.
With that said, we don’t know if we’re looking at the MCU reboot mirroring the prequels from Fox with teenage mutants or simply going to have a different energy by casting younger talent to fill the key roles, as Feige has been trying to avoid talking about what the mutant lineup is going to look like.
What Feige has recently promised is that we’re going to get “comic-accurate looks” in “X-Men,” after the previous studio went out of their way to avoid using the comic book costumes. Something that got fixed with “Deadpool & Wolverine,” giving both Logan and Gambit the Jim Lee-era takes on their super suits.
