Duffer Brothers Tease Secretive ‘Stranger Things’ Spinoff Is "Different Than What Anyone Is Expecting"

Netflix is taking an internal look at its spending habits on content after multiple rounds of layoffs (L.A. Times reporting 300 employees were let go recently) and axing multiple animated projects such as the Ava DuVernay-produced “Wings of Fire.” With that in mind, they’ve been reportedly spending $30 million an episode on the fourth season of “Stranger Things” and will continue to spend more cash. The streaming service is still all-in on the ’80s-set nostalgia sci-fi horror series as Season 5 still needs to be shot and there are already plans for spinoffs from the Duffer Brothers.

However, we’re still in the dark about what the spinoff plans are and how they will even connect to “Stranger Things.” Speaking with Variety, the sibling duo gave a brief comment about one of the spinoffs, indicating they won’t shoot until Season 5 wraps.

“There’s a version of it developing in parallel [to Season 5], but they would never shoot it parallel,” Ross Duffer stated. “I think actually we’re going to start delving into that soon as we’re winding down and finishing these visual effects, Matt and I are going to start getting into it.”

Matt Dufferwent on to make things even more interesting by suggesting that even Netflix isn’t even expecting/aware of what they have been cooking up on the hush-hush.

“The reason we haven’t done anything is just because you don’t want to be doing it for the wrong reasons, and it was just like, ‘Is this something I would want to make regardless of it being related to “Stranger Things” or not?'” the filmmaker said. “And definitely. Even if we took the ‘Stranger Things’ title off of it, I’m so, so excited about it. But it is not… It’s going to be different than what anyone is expecting, including Netflix.”

However, someone might have cracked the code as cast member Finn Wolfhard has guessed what they’re working on.

Matt Duffer added, “Finn Wolfhard, he wasn’t spitballing, he just went, ‘I think this would be a cool spin-off. And we were like, ‘How in the world…'”

You won’t have to wait too long for the second half of Season 4 as it will launch on July 1.
